All 46 member states of the Council of Europe have endorsed a declaration calling for a renewed interpretation of the European human rights system in response to mounting migration pressure.
The declaration comes nearly a year after migration hardliners Denmark and Italy penned an open letter – endorsed by around ten other countries, including Poland, Austria, and Hungary – accusing the judges of overstepping their mandate and restricting governments’ ability to act in migration cases.
The European Court of Human Rights is the international body responsible for enforcing the Convention across the 46 Council of Europe countries under the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe is an international multilateral organisation separate from the EU institutions.
The declaration – approved in Moldova’s capital Chișinău – warns that the world has changed since the human right convention’s conception.
