International law may need to be “updated” to reflect modern security threats, Israel’s ambassador to the EU, Avi Nir-Feldklein, told Euractiv, while responding to accusations that Israel violated it with US-backed strikes on Iran.

“We’re in a totally different world,” Nir-Feldklein said in an interview with Euractiv’s flagship newsletter Rapporteur, pointing to terrorism and hybrid warfare. “Shouldn’t we try to craft our rules differently?”

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have framed the strikes as preventative, but not everyone agrees. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is campaigning in regional elections on a distinctly anti-war ticket, while in France, President Emmanuel Macron has said the attacks took place “outside” international law.
